I've been using pithhelmet for awhile and I love the way it dumps those annoying flash ads and collapses out banners instead of leaving large gaping white holes everywhere.
There are firefox plugins that seem to be as popular for the same reason. I hear a lot of people recommending "noscript" plugin for firefox but I assume that only handles java annoyances and not banners in general.
