I was intending to post to that effect last night, but my research didn't confirm that assertion. In fact, it's possible that this is one of the notable exceptions.

The current MacBook Pro models were introduced on June 8, 2009 and shipped with OS X 10.5.7. The platform-wide shift to OS X 10.6 occurred on August 28, 2009.

Absent any anecdotal confirmation that the current MacBook Pros can run Leopard, I certainly wouldn't suggest that slolerner take that gamble, but the possibility might warrant further investigation. (It should be noted that in any case, a Leopard retail disc of OS X 10.5.7 or later would be required.)
