The Seagate site showed that the new drive's firmware is up to date. I left an email case on their website since it was after hours by the time I got around to it. There was no mention of the attempted boots in the Console. I hope Seagate has a solution.

I may give Applecare the links to this thread and the Apple forum thread plus whatever Seagate has to say. They may be willing to swap the logic board if they know of similar problems.
