Hmmm... I knew there was a keyboard command, but I couldn't remember it, so I ran sudo kill (dd process #).
Since you posted, though, I tried control-C, but all it did was de-focus my Terminal window; control-option-C, on the other hand, did kill the process

Maybe your keyboard is on the blink too.
