MG2009, did you ever diagnose the issue? I am seeing the exact same problem as you described, on a Fusion Drive in a 2014 iMac. I can erase, run first aid, on the SSD portion. Any attempt to access the HDD portion fails, whether through terminal or Disk utility, always ending with "Cannot write to the end of blocks."
Has the HDD simply failed, requiring replacement?
