On the left is the list of texts. Each one has an "x" so that it can be deleted separately from all the others. It seems to be hit and miss, but there are times when I click the "x" on one text and they all disappear! This has never happened before.

navigate to System Preferences > Notifications & Focus > Notifications
scroll down the list of apps in the left hand pane and click on Messages
at the bottom of the right hand pane in the Notification grouping drop down menu, select OFF
