I've never attempted to use DU to clone a drive either, but I suppose it could be done as you suggest via the mechanism of a disk image file. I have used DU to recover a system from a Time Machine backup and that was pretty straight forward.
If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?
