I haven't tried this, but it's worth making this suggestion: Adjust the screen resolution to a greater value. That will make all the print smaller but it may also reveal the bottom of your Excel window. After you are done, you can reset the resolution.
Thank you....that did it. Interestingly, it took two attempts. The first time, it didn't expose the bottom bar but simply restored the original problem. However, as it made the resolution change (following the short interval of black screen), there was a very quick flash of the workbook in its entirety so I thought it was worth a second try and I repeated the sequence. It was a case of "second time lucky".
