skype and ichat do uPNP pretty well, but you need to have it supported on one (preferably both) ends of the conversation to work around routers. If the wifi hotspot doesn't support it, and your home router doesn't or it's disabled, you will have problems. And it can be maddening because others may have no problems chatting with you both.
