I thought I had set OSX up through Spotlight's preference pane to index once a week. Perhaps I was mistaken. Which OS are you using? I don't have any options to schedule indexing in 10.5.8 and I don't recall seeing it in 10.4 either. Are you using 10.6 and is this an option there?
