Okay... yes i knew about Bean, but somehow it never got posted to MFI.  My bad.

Here's an assortment of freeware food:
  • Bean -- rich text editor
     
  • Tofu -- nifty reader (need to try to see why)
     
  • Skim -- pdf reader and note-taker
