I'm not sure why it didn't work the first time, but this time it did. How do I get it to my desktop. I clicked "control" and got some options but no "move to" options except trash. I couldn't drag it either.
When I paste " ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist" (NO quotes) into a Go to Folder window it takes me right there.
If not, just type in ~/Library and navigate.
