The icon on the larger (female) connector indicates it is a DVI port, and the smaller (male) connector is not the right shape or proportion for HDMI. So I think Artie's second suggestion is the right one. It is a Mini DisplayPort to DVI adaptor.
If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?
