To digress momentarily, kudos to VueScan. I sent a note to them yesterday morning via their Problem Report link and, before the morning was out, got a reply with a link to the scanner driver. For me, a big part of judging a publisher is seeing how they respond to customers (or potential customers). VueScan gets "two thumbs up".
