Darn, you often have the best answers! Not this round- yet. You are not a drag thing user or have a secondary dock?

(ok now looking at app wizard more carefully, and do see the others buttons I never use, but far from drag things where you can put documents, folders by choice)


To each her or his own BUT… Application Wizard creates a mini-dock in a location of your choice. As you observed, there are other buttons, and in particular the blue one allows you load folders, files and apps of your choosing. It is highly customizable; it runs as a Preference Pane. Take another look if you don't find what you want.
