I was confused by "Open in Adobe Reader.... [It costs.]" which implies that it's not free.
Mea culpa. I should have avoided the shorthand and noted that when you select Convert to Word online, it takes you to a pricing page (before conversion). That's one of the reasons Acrobat is a better deal in the long run.
