Firefox doesn't seem to engage in such behavior; but as with all apps where I'm given the option I've only enabled manual updating. Safari doesn't either, but I can't find any way to manage updating.
Bottom line: Word was not the culprit.
Bottom line:
Some recent Safari updates have been included in macOS updates, and others have been available only from the App Store; there's no aye/nay option within the app.
