I was recently given a flat screen VGA monitor which I thought would be handy to use with my MacBook Pro. So, I bought an HDMI to VGA adapter to interface between the two. When I plug it in to the Mac, nothing happens on the VGA display, and the MacBook built-in display blinks off and on every couple of seconds.

Thinking that the VGA display might be defective, I connected it to my Panasonic laptop HDMI output using the same HDMI to VGA adapter. It worked fine with the Panasonic laptop. I also connected the display + adapter to the HDMI output of my DVD player. It also worked with the DVD player, properly displaying the various menus. However I got a blue screen when I tried to play an actual DVD. I assume that this is because the adapter does not handle HDCP protected content.

Do you think the MacBook refuses to work with this display because of the lack of HDCP compliance, or is there some other problem? I would think that the HDCP compliance issue would only come into play if I try to send copy protected video to the display, and that the video should display properly for other stuff.

My MacBook Pro is a mid-2015 15" Retina model.
