OK. At home I always unhook from the mac to get to the printer and then rehook up when I bring it back to the room. But when I take it places, I always plug it in while it' already in the Mac. I had no idea. I will change that from now on.

In case you're unaware of it, you should ALWAYS plug you power adaptor into the wall BEFORE you plug it into your Mac.
