OK. I unplugged the wall plug part of the adapter and plugged it into the wall outlet. No sparks. Then I reattached it to the rest of the adapter and had sparks. So, I guess the problem is within the adapter box or further on down the line to toward the part that connects to the iBook. To me it's a brick anyway so I am not going to buy a new adapter just to find out. Thanks for giving me the idea to check it, though.

👺 You should NOT be getting sparks when you pug in a properly functioning power supply. Your issue may be a malfunctioning power supply which in turn is failing to charge the battery. It could also be a bad wall plug.
