That was good advice then and still good advice if you are buying older Macs. However, it should be noted that Macs manufactured since roughly mid 2012 do not ship with an install CD/DVD and in fact many those Macs do not even have an optical disc drive.

Thanks for updating my comment. It's still pertinent for w4rao (and anybody else interested in an older Mac), though, who just bought a 2011 MBP and is liable to buy another one.

Or a trip to the Genius Desk at the nearest Apple Store, tell them what has happened and ask that they install the latest compatible version of OS X/MacOS, which they will do, or at least the local Apple Store here will, even on Macs that have officially been designated as obsolete.

I was aware that Apple Stores do complimentary installs of OS X/macOS for people who don't have access to broadband, but I wasn't aware that they might accommodate people in w4rao's situation. Thanks for pointing out the possibility. (Reflecting on it, though, it seems like they'd be more likely to advise w4rao to buy Snowy install discs from the Apple Store than to be accommodating.)
