Downloaded SIERRA on a MBPro and made a bootable flash drive before installing. Then used that same flash drive to install Sierra on the desktop. Smooth operation on both machines.
P.S. The MBPro is registered with Apple in my name; the desktop is registered in my spouse's name . . . so the download does not "appear" to be "owner or machine specific."
