though not strictly an upsell in this case, you have to consider the source of "helpful suggestions". In the case of AV, it almost exclusively comes from someone with little to no mac experience. While the landscape is constantly changing, historically AV software has been more likely to
cause problems than to
prevent them. I've lost count of the number of times I've had to remove AV software to fix a mac.
