kevs will have to answer this himself, but there is a desktop folder. The path is ~/Desktop. I assume that he does not mean that one, but a folder located on the desktop.
~/ is Unix shorthand for the currently logged on user's home folder. Therefore ~/Desktop is the logged on user's desktop folder.
If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?
