Yes, I've tried running the updater in safe mode. No go.

I'm going to restore the complete original system fonts folder and see what happens. The next step will be to do as Jon suggests.

I will also read Kurt Lang's treatise on fonts another time. I've been following his advice for years on keeping system fonts to a minimum. However now, with the size of hard drives and speed of processor and 24 Gbs RAM, I suppose it's not as necessary as it was twenty years ago.

And since I've stopped work (especially DTP) I no longer really needed 2,500 fonts on tap. Creature of habit...
