It's the original card, about 8 years old.

I talked with an Apple tech at the VAR where the machine was purchased and he thought the card was bad, but without actual testing it, it was just a guess.

But I fear I will never know. After mucking about too long, I connected the machine directly to the router. This required some moving of furniture, but my wife is strong.
