Journaling is a feature that you can toggle on or off at will without having to erase/reformat the drive. Cocktail, OnyX, and TinkerTool System can all toggle this feature on or off on any drive formatted Mac OS Extended. Just be sure you get a version of any of these utilities that is compatible with OS X 10.3. The latest versions are not compatible.
