If it is just heavy site usage, we might be faced with the difficult choice of figuring out how to pay for more server resources, whether that be putting ads on the site or asking people for donations or whatever it might be.
Are there any metrics you can look at to see if there's been a substantial increase in traffic recently?
Also you've mentioned getting DDOS'd before, is there a chance there's a low-profile DOS going on?
