Hah! Finally nailed that sucker. Sorry it took so long.

Try another cable with your iPod Nano. It is entirely possible there is a broken or otherwise damaged lead somewhere in that cable that is causing the problems. It can happen even when there is no apparent damage externally.

You Belkin USB hub would have been my first suspect simply because hubs are so often flakey but that does not appear to be the case here.
