The thing is, I also recall using a compression utility (quite some time ago) with a prefs option to remove the original when compressing files/folders, but that option is not available with Apple’s Archive util (/System/Library/CoreServices/Applications/Archive Utility.app).
Actually, it is: Archive Utility's Preferences window in Yosemite appears identical to that in the screenshot in artie's linked article.
