Well, things got hectic quick so I just erased a small external drive I have and did a system installation on that, it gave me at least a startup drive because there were many problems getting the internal drive to zero out with disk utility. Maybe part of the problem was something 'stuck' to that drive. Kept freezing the computer and had to keep starting over. Will make an official one when I get a chance. Will try what you suggested.

btw, the error string had them stumped at the Apple store, too. My theory is the problem originated with the airport software. Falling off the network was the first symptom before each freeze. One suggestion they made, because the network kept finally giving the message that the airport card was not installed was that since it is located inside the hinge, it may have become damaged through ordinary use. When I reinstalled the system, I left off the airport update software for now and so far, so good. One step at a time.
