I think Rita must be using List View, with the disclosure triangles for System, System/Library, and Library expanded, and the Name column, reverse order chosen as the means of sorting. When I view my hard drive's contents that way, Select All, then copy and paste, this is what I get:

Note that I don't have VLC.app, vlc-2.0.3.dmg, Perian 1.2.3, opt, Documents, or Backups.backupdb in my list, but otherwise it's identical to hers.

I don't know what to make of Documents or Backups.backupdb appearing at the top level of the startup volume...
