I have tried many times to duplicate what you described. I have not been successful

Well, it's certainly possible that the number field problem I described has been fixed in later versions of iCal than the one I used, or that you already were aware of it and made sure things got entered correctly. Should that be the case, I still think it pays to open the event periodically to see if the alert has changed. It might keep your wife from getting annoyed again...
