In troubleshooting you tend to start with 'the' obvious problem(s), then take it from there. Given the symptoms you reported, it was IMHO not unreasonable to start looking into a MacKeeper issue. But there's always the possibility of a clusterf*(!, something I acknowledged earlier on in this thread.

As things developed in this thread, more and more symptoms and conditions appeared that suggested MK might not be the only problem around. What the exact chain of events was I don't know, but presumably a recent interaction brought the MacKeeper issue to the fore, as sort of the point item of a veritable Gordian Knot of problems. Sometimes, those can be unraveled and resolved piecemeal, at other times only the nuclear option can prevail. We'll see how this one develops.
