Thanks, Jon. I just now gave that a shot and the response was that the diagnostics indicate the drive is operating normally.

The drive is not too old....machine was purchased in 2009 and we're not heavy users.

In thinking about new clues I had forgot that a few days ago we had a power outage while I was using the machine. I have surge-protected AC but, who knows, there may have been a spike too large to get clamped. That might make me wonder about Logic Board damage, although I'd think I would have more serious problems.

I'm starting to think these blues should be in E .....for exasperation.
