OK. Now this is what happened. When it was "spinning" the light was steady. Now that the spinning has stopped, the light is blinking off and on slowly. I would have thought it would have been the other way around. Blinking meant downloading.

As long as you can feel the drive doing something, don't go any further.
When it's stopped all activity, you can unplug it safely.
