Thanks. I've just done that and it's just completed the re-index but still doesn't find the folder. I also own OnyX, so I'll give it a try in the morning.

No, that's not something I'd do. I had thought that the answer might be found in Disk Utility and therefore looked there. i.e. had journaling somehow got turned off?

When I saw that the enable/disable button wasn't even functional, I wondered if Disk Utility might itself be faulty and thereby be contributing to the issue.
