TotalFinder is one example... and it also allows for tabbed Finder windows, which is cool.
Warning: the last time i tested TotalFinder, it had an undesirable effect of altering the drag-n-drop behavior in Finder. E.g., while we are working in another app (i.e., Finder not frontmost), a click-
and-hold on a file or folder in a window would always instantly activate Finder. I couldn't tolerate that limitation... but perhaps the developer has fixed it by now.
