Thanks for your help macnerd10. Problem solved. I took your advice and trashed away the old trackpad preference file. I was unaware that the user Library folder was hidden and so I searched for Finder help to navigate to Library and managed to open it holding down the option key. My gosh, all the trial and error - silly me.
