Thunderbird 7 will NOT open .eml documents. Apparently this bug has been known for some time and there is fix for same, but there has been no official update which takes such into account and made available to users.
Apparently it will open in Thunderbird 7. I just had to select that as the app to open it with rather than Mail (in the file's information page). Problem solved (at least for the time being).
