And that likely has its roots in the original rationale (as I recall) for having things like Debit Cards. The banks were able to save a lot of money by laying off a bunch of people who would otherwise have been involved in things like service. There was a time when the bank would have had someone call you to verify before making such a drastic move as bouncing your cheque.
