Okay; so I'm impatient.
I tried to clone Lion on my Intel iMac to my APM external firewire using DU and the Recovery "partition" on my Intel iMac. DU said: No way Jose -- you have to have the GUID formatting on your external to use Restore with Lion.
I had worried about this -- hence my prior post.
So it looks like I need an additional drive to clone both my PPC Leopard and Intel Lion. Good thing drives don't cost much anymore. And if I wanted to use Time Machine for my two iMacs, wouldn't I also need two backup drives?
