That's for sure. It's baaaack....

This morning, after opening from the log-in window, the left side of the menu bar loaded but the right side stopped at the Sophos Icon. I waited a while but nothing further happened.

1) The right side menu bar stuff was working so I did a Shutdown - which took about two minutes to complete. On reboot, the log-in window was frozen.

2) I rebooted and after about 7 minutes of blue screen tried to force a shutdown using the AC button. After a few seconds the log-in screen appeared....but was frozen.

3) I held the AC until I got a complete shutdown and then unplugged the machine for about a minute.

4) A reboot got the chime...about 2 minutes until the blue screen...then, after 3 minutes of blue screen I tried to force a shutdown and got a repeat of #2 above.

5) I again did a forced Shutdown but rebooted using the Option key. I selected the main drive but still got to a frozen log-in window. I repeated Option key and tried booting from my backup drive. Frozen log-in window.

6) I started with an NVRAM clear but that didn't help.

7) I did a Safe Boot but the log-in window was still frozen.

8) I booted with Disk Warrior 4.3 and did a directory rebuild. NADA.

9) I tried booting with my grey iMac disk but after an interminably long time I gave up. Forced shutdown and rebooted with trackball button to eject disk.

10) Rebooted with Snow Leopard 10.6 and did a reinstall. Restart got me to my drive but the audio wasn't working. A check of the sound output showed it had been switched to "CD Spin Doctor Capture Support" rather than Internal Speakers.

My Mail program was no longer accepting Mail.

Everything else seemed to be working so I took the opportunity to delete Sophos using Clean App.

I figured things would improve if I got the system up to date so I did the entire 10.6.8 update. Mistake.

11) A reboot got me back to a frozen log-in window.

12) I did another re-install of SL 10.6 and was able to boot but there were a couple of curiosities.

Sophos was back. Have no idea how.

My mail port was set to the wrong number.

As the top right of the menu bar was loading a white block appeared as if it was the second item loading, and then went away.

I am now operating with SN 10.6 and have no intention of shutting off the machine until I finish a project that has to get out the door by end of day tomorrow.

Meanwhile I entered a few Terminal commands (per earlier in this thread) not knowing whether they'll be helpful or not. I guess they can't hurt.
