I am surprised no one has suggested resetting/flushing Safari's caches, history, preview images, website icons, fonts or if all else fails simply reset everything in Safari.
I'm surprised (or will be, if) an old timer like the dragon posted such a plea for help without at least trying most (if not all) of those already.

Crashes are rare and I don't recall any during my daily visits to MacUpdate.
Do you download from their links, or do you go to the developer's page to download?
Both, but mostly the former.
Then between our lists (yours, mine and andycap's), perhaps Ultimate Status Bar is the culprit, for those macupdate.com crashes which andycap and i (me?) are experiencing.
