To give the Devil its due, this is looking more like corruption in the original document rather than a fault attributable to Microsoft. I've generally found that the XML Converter works very well.
I have MS Office 2004 on my drive as I have at least three sources of documents from people in organizations that use Word for Windows. The XML Converter allows me to exchange documents with them without having to buy an expensive replacement for my seven year old software.
