Exactly: In your situation, I don't think it would be much help. I'd recommend following Artie's good advice and burning an AHT disc. Then try booting from the CD, either by holding down 'C' at boot, or booting to startup disk selection mode (holding <option> at boot) and selecting the CD.

EDIT: Wait, correction: Where it's useful, is to see whether your friend's iMac can even detect the drive. If you can boot to TDM (holding 'T') and access your drive from your friend's Mac, it at least tells you basic info that your drive is readable. Then booting from AHT will give you more testing info. Normally it might be useful to run utilities right from your friend's Mac, but since he's running OS X 10.0, I wouldn't.
