A co-worker had an issue like this. It was the switch that was being used, the MacBook couldn't autoset the proper settings for a connection. He needed to go into Ethernet Advanced and in the Ethernet settings tab change the configure from automatic to manual, then change the speed to one of the other settings (I don't recall which one) to make the port see the connection.
