The first thing I would check is System Preferences > Network to be sure that ethernet is not only connected, is it enabled in the list of possible connections. If ethernet does not appear on the list of network connections, click on the plus (+) sign at the bottom of the connections list and add ethernet.
If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?
