Mail has lost folder structure

My brother (Monterey latest) has just had all his Mail sub folders suddenly disappear. We have tried to restore the OS from Time Machine but the snapshots available all appear to be dated more than 2 years ago. Getting that far was hard enough with the timing of the Restart and command R key combo.

I’m unsure if this is the right approach to get back the sub folders and would be grateful for any advice.

  1. Boot the system normally
  2. Press ⌘G
  3. At the prompt enter ~/Library
  4. Scroll down and select the Mail folder
  5. Click on the Time Machine icon on the menu bar and from the dropdown menu select “Enter Time Machine”
  6. Once the timeline appears on the right edge of the window (that may take several seconds) select the point in time you wish to restore
  7. Click the button at the bottom of the window labeled Restore.

If we knew what it was we were doing, it wouldn't be called research, would it?

Many thanks mate.

Before I saw your post we had tried the virtual blockbuster by using Migration Assistant to restore the whole lot via a Time Machine “snapshot” (?) dated a few days ago. This has done the job of getting back the missing folders although, as you might expect, took a good 3 hours. Your solution takes far less time and is much more elegant!
