Good question.

I wonder if it's possible without re-registering?

(After too many years, eBay finally got around to allowing members to change their user names without re-registering and losing their feedback in the balance, but I don't think I've run across any other website that allows it.)

I'd guess that it can't be done within the same registration. I bumped into the name issue when changing from MaxFixit to FineTunedMac. I don't recall all of the specifics but I do remember that, once you have a name registered, it sticks.

I don't think that's unusual. When I wanted to change my user name at a financial site, it required a re-registration.

Are their any disadvantages to re-registering?

Other than that your posting history won't be connected to your new user name, I can't think of anything.
